North Korea Boosts Naval Power: NK News, a specialist North Korea media outlet, confirmed through satellite imagery analysis that North Korea has deployed an additional 1,500-ton Tuman-class frigate to Kosong Port on the East Sea during joint US-South Korean naval exercises. The satellite imagery revealed that the frigate departed the Munchon naval base shipyard on October 30th and remained at Kosong Port until November 9th, where it was docked alongside the already-deployed Amnok-class frigate. This highlights North Korea's military intentions and capabilities in the region.

This move is interpreted as an effort by the North Korean Navy to enhance its operational capabilities in the East Sea. Notably, the Amnok-class frigate is known to be the vessel aboard which North Korean leader Kim Jong-un observed a cruise missile test launch in 2023. The newly deployed Tuman-class frigate is larger than the Amnok-class and is equipped with anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and torpedoes, giving it anti-surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. US-South Korea Joint Drills and North Korea's Response: This move by North Korea is analyzed to be directly linked to the joint US-South Korean naval exercises. In the past, North Korea has conducted missile launches and naval artillery drills during joint US-South Korean exercises as a show of force. The additional deployment of the Tuman-class frigate can be interpreted as a display of North Korea's naval power and a sign of its opposition to the joint exercises. Response Readiness and the International Community's Position:

South Korean military authorities are closely monitoring North Korean military movements and preparing for any contingencies. A military official stated, "We are thoroughly prepared for any potential North Korean provocations and will firmly safeguard security on the Korean Peninsula through close cooperation between the US and South Korea." The US and South Korea are conducting joint exercises in preparation for North Korea's military actions and are working with the international community to deter North Korea's nuclear and missile development. Outlook and Response: North Korea's continued attempts to strengthen its naval power are a factor in escalating military tensions in the region. Some experts have emphasized the importance of peaceful resolution through dialogue while continuously observing North Korea's military movements. Currently, the South Korean military is closely monitoring North Korea's additional military movements and maintaining all necessary readiness postures.
