Lee Jae-myung Announces Acquisition of 260,000 GPUs, Prioritizes Balanced AI Development
President Lee Jae-myung announced the acquisition of 260,000 GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) to promote balanced development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. This announcement signals the government's commitment to fostering an AI ecosystem that ensures AI technology benefits society as a whole, rather than being concentrated in specific companies or sectors.
President Lee anticipates that securing the GPUs will strengthen South Korea's AI technology competitiveness and improve public access to AI technology. The government plans to support domestic AI research institutions and companies in jointly utilizing the acquired GPUs.
"The acquisition of 260,000 GPUs will be a significant turning point in the development of AI technology in South Korea," President Lee emphasized. "We will focus government capabilities on building a balanced ecosystem so that AI technology contributes to the development of society as a whole, rather than solely serving the interests of specific companies."
This government-led GPU acquisition demonstrates its commitment to continuously expanding infrastructure for AI research and development. The Ministry of Science and ICT intends to efficiently allocate GPU resources and continuously expand infrastructure for AI research and development.
In addition to securing GPUs, the Ministry of Science and ICT is pursuing policies to strengthen the overall AI ecosystem, including fostering AI talent, building data sets, and refining legal and institutional frameworks. Alongside strengthening AI technology competitiveness, discussions on AI ethics issues will also be actively pursued.
Some have questioned whether the acquired GPU quantity is sufficient for actual AI development and research. Large-scale AI model training and operation require vast computing resources, and it has been pointed out that 260,000 GPUs may not be enough to meet all demands.
In response to these concerns, the government stated that it is reviewing plans for additional GPU acquisitions. It is also exploring various options, such as utilizing cloud-based AI computing resources, and will support the development of AI model lightweighting and optimization technologies to efficiently utilize GPU resources.
Following the GPU acquisition announcement, domestic AI-related companies have shown positive reactions. Startups and small and medium-sized enterprises with limited capital, in particular, are expected to accelerate AI technology development as they can utilize high-performance computing resources through government support.
As the pace of AI technology development accelerates, discussions on AI-related regulations are also expected to become more active. The need for establishing an AI regulatory framework is being raised in various aspects, including personal information protection, data utilization, and AI ethics.
The government plans to refine related laws and regulations and establish AI ethics guidelines to create a safe and reliable AI environment, along with the development of AI technology. It will also devise countermeasures against social problems caused by AI technology misuse.
President Lee Jae-myung emphasized that "AI is a core engine that will drive innovation and development in our society." He added, "We will continue to make efforts for balanced development and ethical use so that AI technology can benefit all citizens."
Starting with this GPU acquisition, the government plans to continuously promote related policies so that AI can have a positive impact on society as a whole, in addition to strengthening AI technology competitiveness. The aim is to ensure that the benefits of AI technology development are not concentrated on specific groups but are evenly distributed to all citizens.
