The number of unclaimed deaths is surging in North Chungcheong Province. Unclaimed deaths in the province have sharply increased from 112 in 2021 to 200 in just three years, and have already exceeded 115 this year. More and more individuals are facing their final moments alone.

Over the past five years, a total of 677 unclaimed deaths have been recorded in North Chungcheong Province. Among these, 235 individuals had no known relatives, preventing funeral arrangements from being made. The remaining 442 were cases where the bereaved families refused to claim the bodies.

This suggests a growing trend of individuals dying alone, socially isolated and disconnected from their families. This phenomenon is likely to worsen as society continues to age.

The national situation is also dire. Last year, the number of unclaimed deaths nationwide exceeded 6,000 for the first time. This indicates a systemic problem rather than a personal one.

The weakening of social networks and the increase in deaths from loneliness are identified as major causes of the rising number of unclaimed deaths. Amid rapid social changes, individualism has intensified, and community spirit has weakened, leading to a growing number of people with severed social connections.

The surge in unclaimed deaths is not just a statistical figure; it is a metric revealing the dark side of our society. Factors such as family breakdown, social isolation, and economic hardship are believed to be complexly contributing to the increase in unclaimed deaths.

While local governments, including North Chungcheong Province, recognize the seriousness of the increasing number of unclaimed deaths, they have yet to find clear solutions. There are criticisms that existing measures are insufficient to handle the rising number of unclaimed deaths.

Cheongju City holds a joint memorial service every year to honor the souls of unclaimed deceased who are newly interred due to expired storage periods or family refusal to claim the bodies. This is regarded as an effort to fulfill the minimum social responsibility.

However, there are calls for fundamental measures to prevent unclaimed deaths, going beyond one-time events like memorial services. Experts suggest strengthening social networks, establishing systems to prevent deaths from loneliness, and supporting the economically vulnerable.

Close cooperation between the government, local authorities, and civic groups is essential to address the problem of unclaimed deaths. In addition, social awareness of unclaimed deaths needs to be improved, and the active interest of members of society is required.

Unclaimed death is a serious problem in our society that can no longer be ignored. We need the attention and efforts of all of us to ensure that no one is left alone until the last moment of their lives. A sense of social responsibility is needed across the entire society.

The increasing trend of unclaimed deaths in North Chungcheong Province can be seen as a microcosm of the nationwide phenomenon. As we enter an aging society, social safety nets become more important, and solving the problem of unclaimed deaths is an essential task for the sustainable development of our society.

Solving the problem of unclaimed deaths requires a change in awareness and active participation from all members of society. We must strive to reduce unclaimed deaths through concern and consideration for our neighbors and continued support for the socially vulnerable. Wisdom from all walks of life must be gathered to come up with practical solutions.
